THE MAKER

Sonny Sisan is a Laotian-American, ceramic artist, florist, and designer in Charleston, SC.

Sonny started his love for ceramics through collecting, finding beauty in ceramic forms both functional and sculptural. He loves collecting pieces that resonates with his love for nature, especially ceramics that remind him of the built and natural surroundings around us.

He started his ceramic practice in 2018 while working full time in interior design. Through his love and passion for design, he found a love for creating shapes of his own by the medium of clay. After some time refining his work, he left the corporate world to start his own creative adventure. Which as of today, now encompasses a full-time floristry business with creative time on the side for his ceramic practice.

His work focuses on the balance of sculpture and function, creating pieces that elevate the everyday experience of using functional objects. His works often focuses on natural finishes, leaving the beauty of form to be highlighted.

With his love for finding joy even in the smallest moments in life, his work intimately connects the object to it’s user by bringing a sense of celebration to using everyday objects. Longevity is something he loves the most about clay. He loves seeing the process of clay begin as something soft and malleable, gradually turning into something that is so rigid and solidified.

Thinking about his love for collecting, he loves the idea of his work being found one day. Whether it be in a pile of rubble, or being passed down into future generations. Striving for a body of work that is truly meant to be loved and used for a lifetime, holding the joys and memories of life through time.
